The IPLive team collaborated with CliffCentral.com to produce a series of podcasts on IP law. The second instalment of the series talks about the “Monkey Selfie” story which considers copyright law in South Africa and more specifically the interplay between authorship and ownership of artistic works.
Once you’ve listened to the podcast you may understand why we did not use the famous “monkey selfie” photo in this post – we just used a photo of a monkey. We used a photo by Jared Rice who uploaded his photo to Unsplash, an archive of “over 300,000 free (do whatever you want) high-resolution photos brought to you by the world’s most generous community of photographers.” We will discuss how sites like Unsplash operates and the ins-and-outs of the copyright in photographs in a future post.
